Nick Drake - "Bryter Layter" Box Set (2013)
Picked up the 2013 reissue of Nick Drake's 1970 album, "Bryter Layter."
I opted for the box set edition, which is more than double than what the standard version goes for.
And really, you don't get that much more bang for your buck.
Here's what is inside the box set:
The box itself is very sturdy. The extras are pretty skimpy and include:
- A replica of a set list
- A double-sided concert bill with show listings on one side and band bios including Nick Drake bio for one of the shows
- A folded shop poster for the Bryter Layter album
Again, not a lot of extras to justify the expense. That said, Nick Drake vinyl seems to consistently increase in value. Plus it's nice to have it in beefy packaging. But there's not much to justify getting the box.
The album itself is good. The John Wood remastering is excellent and you get several download versions including a 24/96 lossless version, plus an MP3 dub of the album from Nick Drake's family collection.
The jacket has the weird texture to it, which is nice touch.
The music speaks for itself. This album has the most orchestration and arrangements of Nick Drake's three albums. Several really amazing songs.
Apparently this is already out of print, but Amazon has it as of the time of the publishing of this blog post.
Sonny Stitt s/t (Roost Records) LP
Sonny Stitt (Roost Records). Found this at Farmer's Market for $1.00. Vinyl a little beat up, but cleaned it with VPN record cleaning machine and it sounds great, despite the crackle.
Simon & Garfunkel - "The Sounds of Silence" 45 Hot Mono Mix
"You are hearing a combination of two things:
1.) The source is vinyl, which was from an analog master tape - not an MP3, or anything digital.

Found this at Farmer's Market earlier in 2009.
This is one of my favorite records that Clifford Brown plays on.

Stereolab's 'hiatus' announcement
Was listening to Stereolab's most recent 'Chemical Chords' and it got me wondering what the band was up to at the moment.Found their announcement that Stereolab is on hiatus. Nooooooooo!!!
Their site says they're working on yet another 'Switched On' comp of singles.
There's also talk of remastering the back catalog. I can only hope that some vinyl reissues will be part of that ... I have some gaps to fill in my collection.
Bummer since I had tickets to see their last show in U.S. in Solana Beach, CA in fall 2008, but had to cancel my vacation due to $$$ issues.
By my calculation that would have been the last U.S. show before the hiatus.
I love this record: The Tanks - "Keep Breaking Down"
Read about The Tanks in MRR and it sounded right up my alley.This Iowa-based trio makes loud and obnoxious rock that is reminiscent of AmRep-style sludge and the powerful pummel of Karp, Hammerhead and Unwound.
The Tanks also remind me of the unbridled rawk ethic of Last of the Juanitas, Federation X and the Wantage USA label.
It's refreshing to hear bands keeping up the tradition of '90s style wailing and who rock boldly and without apology.

Traded in a bunch of garage sale / flea market book finds and got some LPs including:
-Radiohead - In Rainbows
-Elliott Smith - XO
-Slayer - Christ Illusion
Nothing groundbreaking, but nice way to fill in some gaps in the collection without coughing up much cash at all.

Return of the Sub Pop Singles Club
Yup, the Sub Pop Singles Club has been revived once again.
For those of us who were in on the first wave of the Singles Club, it was an exciting time indeed.
Sure, ya ended up with many useless 45s such as the Big Damn Crazyweight 7" that ya can't even get a buck for on eBay. (And don't even get me started on Big Chief.)
But many of those Singles Club records such as the Unsane and Rapeman 7"s were pretty fuckin' righteous.
Anyway, this round of subscription-only is limited to 1,500 copies of each 7". The club runs for twelve months only and will set you back $75, which ain't a bad deal at all.
The singles will also come with a coupon for digital download, which means some asshole will have already posted it on indietorrents before you even lay eyes on the vinyl.
Nine of the 12 bands have been announced: Om, Unnatural Helpers, Tyvek, Black Mountain, Black Lips, Arthur & Yu, Mika Miko, Blues Control and Notwist.
That leaves three bands up in the air. My guess is that at least one of those bands will be a huge name and their 7" will be worth the price of admission alone. I'm also guessing there'll be a bonus 7" of some sort, featuring one of Sub Pop's roster acts.

From Wilmington, DE to Wilmington, NC
I was on vacation last week in North Carolina.
One day I trekked into Wilmington, NC.
First stop was Flaming Amy's Burrito Barn.
This joint was awesome. Cute punk chicks with tattoos workin' the registers, nice salsa bar and burritos the size of an NFL football. Dee-lish!
Then I went over to Gravity Records, where I scored a bunch of Stereolab LPs! Woo hoo.
Strolled around downtown Wilmington some and stopped off at The Front Street Brewery, which I went to about 10 years ago on a road trip with Caterpillar.

Had a very solid workout today. Did 30 minutes of cardio and had my heart rate up there.
This is in prep for a climb the stairs fundraiser I'm doing in Philly in two months.

Gawd, what a beatiful record. It is definitely one record that moves me every time I hear it.

Come has long since broken up, and Thalia Zedek and Chris Brokaw have released a ton of solo records between the two of them.
Thalia and Chris even got back together in November 2007 to play a few Come songs.

Rediscovering the magic of Low
When I was out in L.A. earlier this year, I picked up Low's "Things We Lost in the Fire" on vinyl.
It had been a while since I listened to Low. I quickly rediscovered the band's awesome vocal harmonies, gentle songs and overall brilliance.
I got a box of records in the mail from Sub Pop today, including Low's "The Great Destroyer."
Here's the video for the song, "Monkey," from that 2005 album.
I know I'm not saying anything that everyone doesn't already know, but I felt compelled to give Low a shout out. What a special band, what special music.
This is the kind of stuff that makes you think, "Yeah, you know what? Life IS good."

I've heard their song "Disaster" on Sirius 26 Left of Center several times now and each instance I think ... wow, that is _really_ exceptional.
They kinda remind me of Galaxie 500 as well as Damon and Naomi, Sigur Ros and The Beach Boys with perhaps even a hint of Spacemen 3 or Spiritualized.
I just ordered their album, "The Besnard Lakes are the Dark Horse" on vinyl.
Here's their intriguing video for the song "For Agent 13" ...
