Yes, I know my Web site is screwed up

In downgrading my hosting package with 1&1, I inadvertently set in motion a process in which my entire Web site was deleted. My call to tech support went something like this.
1&1 Tech: "Did you make a back up of all your files?"
McG: "No. I am an idiot."
1&1 Tech: "Thanks for calling and have a nice day!"
Fortunately, I was able to restore a good portion of it and publish via blogspot as a temporary fix.
In the coming weeks I'm either gonna plow ahead on blogspot and take advantage of the custom templates, or revert back to ftp publishing.
The downside to using blogspot is that is changes all the URLs for the Web pages.
For example:
http://www.davemcgurgan.com/another_boring_post.html
becomes
http://www.blogspot.davemcgurgan.com/another_boring_post.html
Unless there is some fix for this, this is bad for any number of reasons, mostly any indexed articles in search engines won't get redirected.
Again, if you know a solution, please let me know, as I am out of solutions at this point.
To compound the problem, the nice design that Dave Koehler did for me is lost. Hopefully he will be able to do a new design for me?!

Site got knocked offline for several days.
Was able to restore most things, although some parts are lost for good.
This'll probably be a good opportunity to retool stuff that I've been thinking, "At some point, I should retool that."
So, I am about to get retooling.

Bitch Magnet - 'Umber': One of the records that influenced me as a drummer
Bitch Magnet was one of those bands I was in awe of.
I got to see them play at The Old Club at Swarthmore College.
After the show, I drunkenly went up to one of the band members and said something stupid that I'm still embarrassed about today.
Fast forward several years and I get a call from Jon Fine, who played guitar in Bitch Magnet.
He's heard about my drumming and wants me to consider playing in his new band, Vineland.
He drives down to Newark, DE and we jam in a basement. It's awesome.
I join the band. Bob Bannister is the guitarist. He is an amazing musician.
I spend the next year and a half or so driving up to NYC nearly every weekend to rehearse.
We play gigs at places I've only dreamed of playing. We record in a legendary studio.
I meet musicians who I consider my idols and have been directly influenced by. They're in the audience watching ME play.
We tour with bands such as Don Caballero and Rodan.
Playing in that band is an experience that had several moments of total brilliance.
And then, I burn out, flame out. I pretty much stop playing drums for good.
I'll do one more band officially, El Tiante, with my pal Mark Erdody after that.
I play a few one-off gigs with Mike Lenert (Lettuce Prey).
And then I stop playing drums altogether.
And even though I still hear the music in my head and listen intently to the drums on every song I listen to, I don't miss playing at all.

Stereolab - Valley Hi!
Not sure if this an official video or not (methinks not), but I like it!
I'll be seeing them on my birthday in October.

-Good eats (swanky)
-Best non-touristy thing to do
Thanks to Doug B. who already sent me some info on record stores.

I won't ruin the "surprise" of this album.
I predict this will be the Don Cab album that everyone loves to hate.
The drums sound awesome. Deep and way booming.
I dig it!

McG trades in crappy books, gets non-crappy LPs
Traded in a bunch of garage sale / flea market book finds and got some LPs including:
-Radiohead - In Rainbows
-Elliott Smith - XO
-Slayer - Christ Illusion
Nothing groundbreaking, but nice way to fill in some gaps in the collection without coughing up much cash at all.

Return of the Sub Pop Singles Club
Yup, the Sub Pop Singles Club has been revived once again.
For those of us who were in on the first wave of the Singles Club, it was an exciting time indeed.
Sure, ya ended up with many useless 45s such as the Big Damn Crazyweight 7" that ya can't even get a buck for on eBay. (And don't even get me started on Big Chief.)
But many of those Singles Club records such as the Unsane and Rapeman 7"s were pretty fuckin' righteous.
Anyway, this round of subscription-only is limited to 1,500 copies of each 7". The club runs for twelve months only and will set you back $75, which ain't a bad deal at all.
The singles will also come with a coupon for digital download, which means some asshole will have already posted it on indietorrents before you even lay eyes on the vinyl.
Nine of the 12 bands have been announced: Om, Unnatural Helpers, Tyvek, Black Mountain, Black Lips, Arthur & Yu, Mika Miko, Blues Control and Notwist.
That leaves three bands up in the air. My guess is that at least one of those bands will be a huge name and their 7" will be worth the price of admission alone. I'm also guessing there'll be a bonus 7" of some sort, featuring one of Sub Pop's roster acts.

McG drumming for El Tiante, 1995
It's not every day you're stumbling around in flickr and find a picture of yourself.
But that's what happened today!
Here I am seen drumming with Mark Erdody in El Tiante in Boston, circa 1995.
This is part of the Indie Shows 1980-1999 flickr pool.
